Nordic Initiative Annual Conference 13-14 June 2017

After slightly more than a year of work in the Joint Nordic Initiative on Arctic Research, representatives from the four different centres of excellence, the Scientific Advisory Board and the Program Committee gathered in Umeå for the first annual conference.  The centres of excellence each have their specific focus but the presentations also revealed some common themes, such as adaptation to climate change in the context of multiple stressors and the importance of including attention to culture and history in Arctic change research. Other themes that were raised in the presentations were modelling climate and risks and to do research at the local scale within larger landscape and global perspectives. Each centre received rigorous questioning not only on the scientific aspects of their research, but on how they are working toward implementing organizational goals, principally related to making interdisciplinarity work in practice.  The board also placed strong emphasis on establishing and maintaining training programs to produce a new generation of innovative Arctic researchers.

REXSAC was represented by Sverker Sörlin, Ninis Rosqvist, Dag Avango, Peder Roberts, Hannu Heikkinen, Annika Nilsson, Camilla Winqvist and Christian Fohringer.
