Dr Hedda Haugen Askland is a Senior Lecturer in Anthropology at The University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Hedda’s research focuses on lived experiences of mining within small scale communities in rural and regional Australia. She is specifically interested in the relationship between large-scale mining corporations and peripheral communities, and the environmental and social effects of mining. Through a focus on displacement and mobility, temporality and materiality, she investigates how mineral extraction, land use and land use change relate to place, power, displacement, home and exile.
