Esa Ruuskanen

Esa Ruuskanen is an Academy Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Oulu, where he has been a faculty member since 2011. He also works as the person responsible for the minor in Environmental Humanities at the University of Oulu. He has been a Leibniz Graduate Fellow at the Herder-Institut, Germany, in 2013 and a Visiting Scholar in the Department of History at the University of Birmingham, UK, in 2015.

Esa Ruuskanen completed his Ph.D. in History at the University of Jyväskylä in 2006. His research interests lie in the area of environmental history and the environmental humanities with a focus on environmental values and the environment-technology interaction. In recent years, he has focused on human-peatland relationships and the emergence of conservation ideas and policies in the Nordic countries and Ireland from the eighteenth century onwards.
