Presentations from Tomorrow’s Arctic EIA Workshop in December

March 22nd, 2018

Environmental Impact Assessment are part of the process for making decisions about new mines and other investment related to extractive industries. To better understand how EIAs for Arctic project can be improved, REXSAC has collaborated with the Arctic Council project Arctic Environmental Impact Assessment (Arctic EIA) in co-organizing a Nordic workshop in Rovaniemi, Finland this past 11-12 December 2017 on the theme Tomorrow’s Arctic EIA: Nordic possibilities and perspectives to Environmental Impact Assessments in the ArcticOne conclusion that ties closely to REXSAC’s work was that there is a strong need to complement project-specific EIAs with their limited scope, with assessment and planning processes that focus on cumulative impacts over long time spans e.g. of mining, other industrial and infrastructure developments, landscape changes, climate change, and social changes.

The summary of the presentations and conclusions from the workshop can be downloaded here.

More information about the project and the presentations from the Nordic workshop are available here.
