Applications open: Three PhD positions in History

The history unit at Luleå University of Technology is currently expanding and therefore three PhD-positions is announced with the aim of strengthening and further developing the unit’s activities and environment.

Background

The history unit at Luleå University of Technology is along with economics, jurisprudence and political science, part of the Division of Social Sciences. The Division currently have a 50-strong staff, including 15 PhD-students.

History research at Luleå University of technology is focused areas related to environmental, energy and natural resources issues. Part of the research is also focused on history of technology and issues such as how technical achievements has influenced societal developments and created large scale interacting systems of technologies during the industrialization phase. Other profile areas include mobility- and minority issues, ethnicity and migration. Furthermore, research in political history and the history of the work life is also undertaken at the unit. The unit’s research is usually conducted in a multi-disciplinary environment together with economists, political scientists, legal scholars and engineers. The unit strives to have a clear international focus on its PhD-program and research.

The PhD-projects must time wise cover issues in modern time and be aligned with the history subjects profile at Luleå University of technology. The PhD students will have the possibility to be affiliated to the REXSAC project.

Subject description

History is the study of humans as social beings with an emphasis on the development, organisation and change of societies over time. The research specializes in the examination of the history of technology at the interface of natural resources, humans and the environment. This includes both how technology has had an impact on humans and society, and how humans have influenced the development of technology. 

Duties

The doctoral student position involves both theoretical and practical work, with the aim of completing a PhD degree. The PhD-candidate is trained in scientific work in the form of studies and publishing of scientific articles in journals and presentations at national and international conferences. The PhD-candidate also will take compulsory and optional doctoral courses that will contribute to your doctoral studies. The work is done both independently and under supervision. It is therefore important that you are self-motivated, able to constructively drive your work forward, and have the ability to identify, define and formulate historical problems, to develop scientifically and personally based on feedback. Work tasks may also include teaching in undergraduate education. The right candidate will also have opportunity to be part of developing the unit’s general activities. The may involve some travelling in conjunction with study- and conference trips.

Qualifications

The applicant must generally have a Master´s degree of which at least one year (equivalent of 60Hp) at the advanced level. Specifically eligible applicant must have:

  • At least 2 years (equivalent of 120 Hp) of history of which at least 30 Hp including a final thesis work of at least 15 Hp on advanced level or equivalenselectiont.
  • Very strong communicative skills in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of Swedish, both verbally and in writing is advantageous.

 

Assessment criteria and selection

The selection of successful candidates will be based on his/hers ability to fulfill the requirement of the PhD-program. The selection will be based on presented merits regarding the candidates critical- and analytical skills regarding scientific production.

In conjunction with applying for the positions the candidate must append a research plan of 5 pages, outlining the candidates proposed research problem/area. The plan must include the purpose and research question(s) and a sketch of how the research will be undertaken. The research plans relevance visavi the history unit´s profile and it´s feasibility will be another selection criterial.

Information

Employment as a PhD student is limited to four years. Teaching and other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20%, may be additional to this time. The place of employment is Luleå.
