ERC grant to REXSAC researcher

March 17th, 2017

REXSAC researcher Peder Roberts has been awarded a European Research Council Starting Grant (award number 716211) to investigate how the polar regions became conceptualised as fragile environments during the Cold War and beyond. The project is titled Greening the Poles: Science, the Environment, and the Creation of the Modern Arctic and Antarctic. The project will include consideration of how pollution control and wildlife conservation became politically sensitive issues during the 1960s and 1970s, what impact mining had upon social and political attitudes to environmental management, and the origins of environmental impact assessment as a practice. Peder plans to link this research to his ongoing work within REXSAC Research Task 4, and to help bring historical perspectives to bear upon interdisciplinary studies of Arctic environmental management structures. He is happy to answer further inquiries at peder.roberts@abe.kth.se
